Rømø Harbor: "Razor-sharp business developer" becomes harbor master
Denmark's southwesternmost port gets a new port master.
Ulla Kiersgaard will take on the role from the turn of the year and become one of the country's few female port masters.
From 2013 to 2019, Ulla Kiersgaard was chief business officer on Bornholm, where she played a central role in establishing Rønne Port as an export port for offshore wind energy.
Among local businesspeople, she was known as a "razor-sharp business developer" and one of the driving forces behind the port's success. This is written by Danish Offshore Industry - DOI.dk.
After Rønne Port, she worked at Muehlhan Wind Service and most recently at SDK Shipping. Now, she is set to lead Rømø Port.
– Yes, that's correct, and it's going to be fantastic. I am really excited about the job, but I am also humble about the task, says Ulla Kiersgaard to DOI.dk.
Focus on growth, customers, and green transition
As the new port master, Ulla Kiersgaard's first order of business is to get to know the port and its users, but she already has big ambitions:
– The port must contribute to growth in Tønder Municipality and at the same time be a part of the green transition. We need to be proactive and curious, so Rømø Port gets on the map. At the same time, we should further develop along with the port's current customers, she says.
Previous attempts to develop new business areas at Rømø Port have not been successful, but that does not deter Ulla Kiersgaard:
– Perhaps what was not possible before, can be done today, she says.
A rare female face among port masters
With her appointment, Ulla Kiersgaard becomes part of a small group of female port masters in Denmark, which also includes figures like Barbara Scheel Agersnap from Copenhagen Malmö Port and Lisette Sønderby from Thorsminde Port.
The ambition is to make Rømø Port a strong player in green energy, food production, and tourism, while taking into account the Natura 2000 areas and the local community.
– Of course, it costs to participate in fairs and networks, but without it, we can't see the opportunities, she says.
