Climate Council's Vice Chairman: Methanol-powered ships make sense but...
The Vice Chairman of the Climate Council, Niels Buus Kristensen, welcomes methanol-powered ships but also points out that the production of green methanol requires vast amounts of yet-to-be-existing electricity. In the short term, the shipping industry could potentially deplete the world's supply of green methanol
Niels Buus Kristensen, the Deputy Chairman of the Danish Climate Council, highlights that producing methanol and ammonia requires a significant amount of electricity, with substantial energy losses during the conversion from electricity to hydrogen and in the combustion engine. Therefore, the use of green fuels in the maritime industry on a large scale is only a viable option when there is a significantly greater capacity for electricity production than is currently available.
